Natural Hair

So I'm thinking about going natural. I have been a slave to the creamy crack(relaxer cremes) for too long. I just love the versatility of natural hair that I just cannot get with relaxed hair.

Her hair is amazing.

So many delusional black women have been conned into think that their natural hair is sub par and that relaxed her is "better" and "easy to manage". I say this is bullshit. They've never even tried to manage their hair. They just slab on a relaxer as soon as they see one wave. It's ridiculous. It's women like that that make black women look bad. Their hair never gets past shoulder length because they put ridiculous harsh chemicals on their hair every four weeks. The wear the same shoulder length hair but say it's versatile.

I have vowed that when I have children, I will not relax their hair(you can hold me to it). I can't teach them to love themselves an love all the features that God gave them if I continue to relax my own hair.

Some people think that they will not get respect in the workplace if they do not have straight hair but I just don't buy it. If your workplace cannot accept the fact that you are black and have kinky, curly, black, afro-textured hair, then you probably shouldn't be working there. They have no respect for you or who you are.

I am a big face of hair forums such as Black Hair Media and Long Hair Care Forum. These two sites have really opened me up to the possibility of going natural and embracing the hair that I was born to have.

Fakebooking

I hate it. For those of you who do not know, fakebooking is a regular person(usually an obsessed fan) creating a fake facebook or myspace account. I think it is just so pathetic.

Seriously, like you spend all your time posing as a celebrity on facebook. Why? For the attention I'm assuming. Probably some pimply faced dude that doesn't get laid often or something. I just feel like it really ridiculously to spend your days posing as someone you are not.

So, I've been stricken with strep throat for this past week or so but glad to let you know that I am back at about 95% and ready to return to blogging.

Fashion: Trend Watch

The upcoming Fall season will bring many traditional pieces to the forefront of fashion. This past Spring 2009 Fashion Week showcased heavy fabrics like wool, tweed and houndstooth patterns, bubble skirts, shiny fabrics, lace, one shoulder dresses(inspired by Michelle Obama's fabulous Inaugural Ball Gown), jackets and suits. These basic pieces are recession chic and sure to spice up anyone's closet.

The Snuggie

This shit should be illegal. This is the Snuggie. It is marketed as a blanket with sleeves. Umm. While I do enjoy being kept warm with a blanket, I don't really feel the need to wear one. The creators of this contraption must have been smoking some good stuff. The first time I this on T.V., I was like WTF?

Have Americans really gotten that simple? We are in a recession and you want to market this useless bullshit to the general public?

Please stop the madness and use a regular blanket.

Movie Review: Madea Goes to Jail

So I saw this movie last Sunday during it's opening weekend. It grossed over $41.1 million in it's opening weekend. Tyler Perry reprises his role as the larger than life, gun toting, short tempted grandma Mabel "Madea" Simmons. This character originated on the stage and was brought to the big screen in "Diary of a Mad Black Woman".

Madea's antics finally catch up with her. After constantly being arrested and released, Madea is finally sent away for a sentence of 5-10 years.

Tyler Perry's films always have a formula of the outrageous Madea character and a more serious subplot. The sublot for this particular film involves a young ADA played by Derek Luke, must reject a case he was given because he happened to know the prostitute defendant named Candy, played by a barely recognizable Keisha Knight Pulliam. Luke's character Josh sets out to help his old friend Candy which is heavily motivated by the guilt of a past secret that they both share. When Candy is sent away for 17 years after being counseled by fellow ADA and fiance of Josh, Josh's suspicion grows about the real facts of her case.

All in all, I give this movie a 3.5 out of 5. There was some parts were I felt was a bit overacted and could have been toned down particularly an important scene including Derek Luke and Oscar nominee, Viola Davis. However, I did enjoy the film.

Tyler Perry constantly comes under attack for making coonish type films and films that so call "portray black people negatively." I however, feel that he brings something to the table that so many white, Hollywood made movies do not. He brings realistic portrays of black people. In his films you will just as easily see outlandish, black characters as you would see upper middle class professionals, persons addicted to drugs, god fearing individuals and just average, everyday black people. Tyler Perry brings dimension to black characters that normal Hollywood rarely does. He is also giving so many talented black actors work that are so few and far in between in Hollywood today. If you are black and your name is not Will Smith or Halle Berry, it is tough times finding a role. So I definitely respect Tyler in that sense.

While people rag on Tyler Perry, he's laughing all the way to the bank and on his way to becoming the 3rd black billionaire.

Chris Brown and Rihanna: The Saga Continues

The saga continues for baby Ike and Tina, I mean Chris Brown and Rihanna. Now domestic violence is no laughing matter.

US Weekly is reporting that pop singer Rihanna, born Robin Fenty, has reunited with her boyfriend, pop singer Chris Brown weeks after he allegedly brutally assaulted her just hours before the Grammys. Pictures of Rihanna showed her battered and bruised and she gained world wide sympathy.

Now I am sure that this is not the first time Chris has put his hands on Rihanna, just the first time he got caught. Rihanna may lose a lot of respect globally if she does take back Chris. She has classic battered woman's syndrome. She probably suffers from very low self esteem and believes that she needs someone like Chris in her life.

Quite frankly, I am sick of the both of them. They both clearly need help but the people around are probably too afraid of them because they are meal tickets in their respective circles.

All I can hope is that they both make the right decision and move on with their lives.

Barack Obama

The 44th President of the United States. My hero. This man does not know the affects that he has had on my life. In all my 21 years of being on this planet, I would have never imagined that this nation would elected a black man as president. And yes, his momma is white, but he calls himself black and that should be respected.

I have watched him go from the junior senator of Illinois to leader of the free world in a matter of months. I was in Washington D.C. when he was sworn in. He really motivates me to work hard and my goals can be achieved. He truly is an inspiration.

However, there are many that do not share my sentiments. The infamous NY Post cartoon:
Oh hell no! So what exactly was the NY Post insinuating here? Looks to me like the people over at the Post are encouraging an assassination attempt on my beloved Barack. The Post however, stated that cartoon was simply illustrated to represent the ineptly written stimulus bill. The Post has since issued a formal apology, but not before the NAACP(of which I am apart) issued a call to Americans to boycott The New York Post. Now you know I was down for that especially since I don't read that shitty paper anyways. How they are still in my city, baffles me.

So many people mad that this man is president. And we are supposed to be in a post racial society. Yeah, ok. We never were. Only 43% of white people who voted in 2008, voted for Barack Obama. Doesn't sound very post racial to me. But people can believe what they want, and Mr. Obama will still be President.
